On May 31st 2006, Wang Shu-hui from the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan, found that a proposal opening up direct transport links with China left a bad taste in her mouth…literally.

In an effort to stop a vote on the subject, Ms Wang impulsively stuffed the proposal into her mouth and began to chew.

In the chaos that ensued, opposition lawmakers pulled on Ms Wang’s hair in attempts to recover the document. She later spat it out and tore it up.

During the melee, another female DPP legislator, Chuang Ho-tzu, spat at an opposition colleague.

“She spat saliva,” yelled Hung Hsiu-chu of the main opposition Nationalist Party.
